SENIOR SWIMMING SPORTS INFORMATION

Dear Parents/Caregivers
Due to our successful swimming sports last year we have decided to use Fairfield College Pool again. To do this we have had to accept a day and time slot that does not interrupt Fairfield College’s own PE programme for their students.

Therefore those Year 4-6 students who wish to compete in the competitive swimming events will be racing at Fairfield College on Monday 2nd March from 10.30-12.00pm. The non-competitive students will remain at school.

A different programme will be organised for our non-competitive students. This will be held at our Woodstock pool at the same time.

For these events we would encourage students to wear their school colours: Kea (green), Pukeko (blue), Tui (black) and Kiwi (yellow).

Competitive event sign-up sheets will be made available to Year 5&6 students in the senior corridor from Monday 23 February to Wednesday 25 February. Please encourage your child to sign themselves up for the competitive events.

Year 4 Students will sign up in their classes with their teachers.

INFORMATION FOR OUR COMPETITIVE SWIMMERS
TIMED FINALS: Due to the limited time frame for our competitive swimmers we will be running the events as timed finals.

Timed finals are when each event and swimmer is timed by 3 timekeepers (i.e. 3 per lane). The median time is used as their final time. Once all heats have been swum and all times recorded they are sorted from the fastest to slowest time thus giving the results for 1st, 2nd and 3rd etc. This type of format is used at the majority of official swim meets.

Therefore there will be no finals swum as we have had in the past. Teachers will be explaining to these competitive swimmers about the need to swim their fastest, in each race.

Students taking part in competitive swimming are required to be able to swim 25 metres without stopping (or 2 lengths of our school pool). Please encourage your child to take part in those events that they feel most comfortable with.

Rules: We will be ensuring that normal swimming rules are applied i.e no breaking of the water with their feet during breaststroke, and a 2-hand touch at the end of breaststroke. We need to comply with these rules due to Cluster Swimming Sports where the rules are enforced more strictly.

Competitive swimmers:  will be having an early morning tea at 9.45am. At 10.00am they will start to walk to Fairfield College. These swimmers will need to bring a sunhat, sunscreen, two towels and a drink bottle.  We will be leaving the pools at 12.00.

Competitive Events will be in year and gender groups in the following events:
·         25m Freestyle,
·         25m Backstroke,
·         25m Breaststroke,
·         House Relays (1 x Yr 4/5/6 student)
·         if time permits 50m Freestyle (starting with our Year 6 students for this event).

To ensure the event is a success we will require parents to help with the timekeeping. Please fill in the form below if you are able to assist on the day. Please return the permission slip by Monday 23 February.  We will be requiring 18 timekeepers.

Parking – if you are attending the competitive event at Fairfield College please park in designated areas or on the road. Do not drive across the grass or park on any grassed areas.

The expectation is that all students opt into either the competitive or non-competitive events. Parents of those students signing up for the non-competitive events do not need to fill in the form below as the expectation is they will be part of our non-competitive events.

Kind Regards
Tara McAuley, Anna Crawford and Vanessa Lynn
