Classes for 2014: I am inviting parents to write to me with any special requests regarding the class placement of their child(ren) for 2014.

Please note that this is not an invitation to request specific teachers, it is rather an opportunity for parents to outline special circumstances/considerations they would like to be considered before classes are actually formed for 2014.

Once classes are formed, the compositions will not readily be changed unless there are very unusual or, extenuating circumstances that were not known at the time of the classes were compiled.

Written submissions are to be in to me before Friday 25 October.

Children Not Returning to Woodstock in 2014: (not including Year 6’s). We would very much appreciate notification (as early as possible) of any child(ren) not be returning to Woodstock School next year. Please ring the office as soon as possible. Thank you.

The Great Waikato Spelling Bee

Pohutukawa Syndicate is very proud of both Dayna Parish (Year 6) and Ciaran Watson (Year 5) for their tremendous efforts representing Woodstock School at the Great Waikato Spelling Bee recently.  Dayna and Ciaran competed against over 50 other students in their respective age groups and the competition was very tense at times!

Special congratulations go to Ciaran for eventually taking out first place in the Year 5 section of the competition

Waste Free Wednesdays
Our new, exciting school wide Enviro-Project began in Week 8 of this term.  For the rest of the year, every Wednesday will be a WASTE FREE WEDNESDAY at Woodstock School.

Our first days have been extremely successful and everyone has being taking it very seriously.

On Waste Free Wednesdays we ask that everyone  . . .

  • packs NUDE FOOD lunches.  (We can use re-usable containers, unwrap our bars at home or pack our food WITHOUT glad-wrap.)
  • uses the WORM BINS to recycle our food scraps.
  • uses  the PAPER RECYCLING BOXES for our paper ‘rubbish’.
  • does not use the RED bins in the playground.  Large classroom rubbish bins are also No Go Zones!!!
  • takes all of their other rubbish home with them in their lunch boxes.  Wrappers, chippy packets, glad wrap, rinsed out yoghurt containers  . . . we take these things home.

Some classes have been doing NUDE FOOD at intervals for a while now.  From now on everyone will be doing nude food at playtime.  This means no litter or rubbish leaves the classrooms at interval.

Nude Food lunch boxes are easier for us to eat, and healthier too.

Thank you for your support with this.  We look forward to sharing with you, our progress with making Woodstock School ‘Waste Free’.

School Picnic
Our first Waste Free Wednesday for Term 4 coincides with National Nude Food Day.  To celebrate National Nude Food Day, we will be having a school picnic.  Everyone will sit together, under the large trees and enjoy our lunches together.  If you are free to join us on National Nude Food Day, our lunch eating time is 12.15pm - 12.30pm.  What to bring:

  • Our own packed nude food lunch from home.
  • Hats (In Term 4 we all wear our ‘sun-smart’ hats when we are outside).
If the weather is not appropriate for us to sit outside, we will sit together in our teams. Come along and join us.   Woodstock School’s Enviro-Team

Well done Alice Ankersmit

Alice’s art entry into the Te Wananga o Aotearoa ‘Arohatia te Reo’ (Cherish the Language) competition won 3rd prize!  Her entry was published in the Nga wahi o Aotearoa: Places in Aotearoa book.

The book can be viewed in our school office reception area

Year 4 Camp - CAMP KARAKARIKI

Our Year 4 students are very excited about our up-coming overnight camp on 21st and 22nd November.  Thank you to everyone who has paid their camp fees of $65.  Just a reminder that camp fees are required to be paid in full by the end of Week 1, Term 4 (Friday 18th October 2013).  Thank you, Kauri Team.

PTA Raffle

Reminder for people to continue selling their raffle tickets and return all sold ticket butts and money to the office as soon as possible.

If you are unable or unwilling to sell the raffle books please also return to the office so that they can be issued to someone else to sell.

Please return sold raffle butts as soon as you can. A big thank you to everyone who have already sold and returned their money and ticket butts.

Robotics
When we first arrived we walked past the office and went inside the robotics class. We were greeted by some Fairfield Intermediate students and the robotics teacher, Mr McPeak. First we watched a small clip of a robot that stacked pancakes. It was so fast at its job. Once we had got over all the excitement we got to make LED lights turn on using playdough, four batteries, and red and black wires. It was amazing. Then we got to use the Rudolf boards. They were awesome. After morning break we got on to the real fun, the robots. We were each given a robot to use. My group’s was called Tigger and my friend Ridwaan’s was called Sleepy but to her it was Grumpy. We had to control the robot using a computer to steer it around a square. I’m glad to say we eventually got there. That is what the Year 6s got up to on our Robotics trip.

Roald Dahl Day
We had a WHIZPOPPING day on Friday the 13th September, celebrating Roald Dahl’s Birthday.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to our art competition.  Our school library walls are now covered with amazing, colourful and clever art works.  We were also very excited to see many Georges, Enormous Crocodiles, Oompa Loompas, Fantastic Mr Foxes, Matildas, BFGs and Willy Wonkas in our classrooms.

Next term we will be having another special dress up day on Friday 15th November to celebrate our Scholastic Book Fair (Week 5, Term 4).  There may even be another art competition with more spot prizes!!  We’ll let you know the theme for the day, closer to the time . . . Thank you again everyone.  Mrs Tangney

Pohutukawa and Kauri Speech finals
The 2013 speech finals went off very well. A big congratulations and well done to all the children in Pohutukawa and Kauri Syndicates for writing and presenting their speeches this year.  It takes a lot of courage and determination to take part in this.

Cure for Kids Red Nose Day 2013
Woodstock School children and staff recently supported the day by coming to school dressed in red things such as caps, t-shirts, pants, shoes and even red noses.

Thank you to all families for your support, we raised $158.40.

Enviro request

We were wondering if there were any landscape designers out in our community who would like to give us some ideas regarding our school gardens and how we can make them more attractive learning areas. We would of course need this advice at a very minimal cost, but would be very happy to acknowledge your contributions .If you know of anybody who would be happy to help us please contact kym@woodstock.school.nz

Saturday morning music classes

The first session for Term 4 of the Hamilton Community Centre of Music school will be on Saturday 19th October. The school is located on the University of Waikato campus and offers group tuition in a wide range of musical instruments at very affordable rates. Classes are usually 30 minutes in length; class times are between 8am and 12:30pm on Saturday mornings during primary school terms.

In Term 4, we are introducing ukulele lessons for the first time. In addition to Beginners and Continuers ukulele classes, we will offer a special ‘sing-along’ format with a new ‘family-rate’ fee structure. Contact the office by phone or email enrolment@hccm.org.nz for details. Online enrolment for ukulele is not yet available.

Also available for children ages 3 through 12 is our Music Makers programme. Based on the Orff-Kodaly principles of music education, these classes incorporate singing, movement and simple percussion instruments to encourage musical exploration. Course fees for Music Makers are based on the child's age and are from $20-$40 per term. Contact us via our website http://www.hccm.ac.nz/ or on 07 838 4611

In order to attend this workshop you need to be able to ride with one hand for at least 3 seconds (so you can signal turns), and also be comfortable with looking behind you while riding. The workshop will cover basic safety and road rules (conducted in the school playground), followed by on-road riding including how to pass a parked car, turning left and right at controlled and un-controlled intersections, and navigating single-lane roundabouts. The course will be held on quieter roads only. No traffic lights or heavily trafficked roads will be used.
