Parking Around the School

PRINCIPALS SPECIAL NEWSLETTER – PARKING

Kia Koutou Katoa

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Parking around the school and Driver behaviour

Unfortunately I have reason to make yet another impassioned plea to drivers to make children’s safety

paramount around the roads bordering the school. I remind all drivers that parking/stopping on broken

yellow lines is breaking the law.

I have had reports of an ever increasing number of drivers not only parking on broken yellow lines but

also doing U turns on the intersection of Fairfield Road and Casey Avenue. This driver behaviour is

putting our children at risk and I ask all drivers to please be more considerate.

I have informed the Police about the situation.

I reprinted a letter from a group of very concerned parents in my last newsletter (yesterday) who

expressed their deep concern that unless driver behaviour improved, they feared for children’s safety.

Given the volume of traffic before and after school, it is practically impossible to provide enough

parking close to the school for everyone. It is not the schools responsibility to provide road side

parking spaces but we do understand the difficulty and inconvenience a lack of spaces causes. However,

drivers have a serious responsibility to all children to ensure they take no action that endangers safety

of any child around the roads.

If necessary, please park further away from the school and walk in to deliver or pick children up. This

would be appreciated.

I am most concerned at the behaviour of some drivers who choose to park illegally and when they are

asked to move on by staff on duty, or other parents, either ignoring or worse, abuse the person asking

them to move off. This behaviour is totally unacceptable.
