Uniform Consultation
Should Woodstock School have a compulsory school uniform?
retain the current voluntary uniform.
Your opinion counts!
The Board of Trustees has
formed a uniform sub-committee to investigate whether the parents of students
at Woodstock School would like:
a compulsory school uniform;
no uniform; or retain the current voluntary uniform.
This notice outlines some
of the common arguments for and against the introduction of a compulsory
school uniform. We have included a sample of arguments to introduce some of the
issues that may arise during the consultation process.
Arguments for a uniform:
1. A feeling of belonging.
2. Minimise differences, teasing,
competition about clothing/appearance.
3. Practical and easy to
look after.
4. Less fuss in the
morning.
5. Teacher focus on
learning, not lost property.
6. A quality uniform may
not cost more than mufti.
7. Smart group
presentation for outings or gatherings.
Arguments against a
uniform:
1. The cost up front.
2. Reduced opportunity for
children to learn about self care and self management.
3. Hassle of keeping on
top of uni-form laundry.
4. Teacher time taken up
“policing” uniform.
5. Lost property will all
look the same.
6. Enforced conformity.
7. Tradition of mufti at
our school dating 50+ years.
The other option is to keep things just as they are;
families who want their children to wear the voluntary school uniform can
continue to do so.
Your opinion counts!
We want to hear from the whole
school community about this issue. It’s important to understand all
perspectives before any decision is made. Although it’s near the end of the
year, we’d like you to think about it over the summer holidays, because
consultation happens in Term 1 2013. More in-formation on that soon. If you’ve
got something to say now, we’ve set up an email account so you can tell us how
you feel about the options.

NZEI Stop Work Meeting
Important Notice:
Dear Parent/Caregiver
The
school has been advised by the NZEI Te Riu Roa that it is holding a Paid Union
Meeting for teachers on Wednesday 14th
November. Accordingly, the majority
of the school’s teaching staff will be unavailable after 1:00pm on that date.
NZEI is
the union that represents primary teachers, primary principals and support
staff. Under the Employment Relations
Act, paid union meetings are a legal entitlement to discuss union business.
The
meetings are part of a national initiative to seek feedback from teachers about
their employment agreement and the Government’s public education policies which
NZEI believes will have a negative effect on teaching and learning.
In our
experience, NZEI calls paid union meetings infrequently and only when it
believes that there is urgent and important business to discuss with its
members. NZEI is particularly concerned
that the Government appears to be moving towards the privatisation of education
and the introduction of a competitive model of schooling and teaching. Other countries that have adopted this model
have seen a decline in their overall educational achievement ranking.
I
encourage you to either keep your child at home or make some other arrangements
for the duration of the meeting. However, if you are sending your child to
school at this time an alternative programme will be provided for her / him for
the duration of the meeting. We apologise for any potential disruption to you
and your child's routine on the day of the meeting.
Thank you
for your cooperation and assistance.

On the 18th of September 65 Woodstock School children were involved in the Year 5-6 Winter Sports Tournament at Southwell School. We entered a hockey team, two netball teams, two rippa-rugby teams and two soccer teams.
The games were played in a pool play

winning teams of each semi-final went on to meet in the final. Our Yr5-6 hockey
team played extremely well and made the finals, coming runners up to
Southwell.
All children played with lots of enthusiasm
and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A big congratulations to Kate Monkley, Ben
Rowe, Ratu Kuruduadua, and Lela Ieremia who received Fair Play
Awards.
Thank you to the following coaches/managers: Natalie Campbell, Lisa Steed, Ann Monahan, Darren Namua, David Cashmore and Suzanne Brown. Without you we wouldn’t have been able to compete at the Winter Sports Tournament. Also thank you to David Wolfe for taking all the fantastic photographs for us.
